You delivered the gallery. The final invoice sat unpaid for 60 days.

Half of all freelancers have been stiffed by a client at least once.

And clients have their own scars: vendors who took the deposit and vanished.

Both sides deserve a handshake that holds. So we built one.

How it works

The handshake, rebuilt for modern work

A handfast was the old way of sealing a bargain: two parties, hands joined, word given. Handfast does the same for your projects, with the money committed up front and released as you deliver.

What is milestone payment protection?

Milestone payment protection is a way of structuring a freelance or contract payment so the client's money is committed to specific project stages up front, and only released to the freelancer as each stage is actually delivered. It gives the freelancer certainty the payment method is real and committed, and gives the client assurance they are not prepaying for work that might never arrive. Handfast implements this using Stripe, with short client confirmation windows before each release, rather than acting as a licensed escrow agent.

01 · THE SEAL

Funds committed on day one

Build your milestone schedule, send one link, and your client signs the contract and commits their payment method to every milestone at booking. The deposit is charged instantly. The rest is sealed to the schedule.

  • Any structure: deposit, event day, delivery, retainers
  • Contract and payment commitment in a single signing flow
  • Client sees the full schedule before agreeing, no surprises

02 · THE RELEASE

Deliver the work, receive the money

Each milestone charges automatically when its trigger fires, either its date or your delivery. A short confirmation window protects the client, then the money moves to your bank. Chasing a final balance becomes a thing you used to do.

  • Automatic charging, no awkward payment reminder emails
  • Raising an issue pauses the clock instead of starting a war
  • Every release logged with timestamps, your professional record
03 · THE PROMISE

Protection that runs both ways

This is what no invoice tool offers. Your client is not asked to trust you with everything up front, and you are not asked to deliver on a promise to pay. The structure itself is the trust. Clients book with confidence, which means you close more work.

  • Clients never prepay the whole project to an unknown vendor
  • You never deliver final work against an unpaid invoice
  • "Protected by Handfast" on your booking page closes nervous clients

One agreement, two protections

The same structure guards both signatures

For you
  • Payment method committed at signing
  • Milestones charge themselves
  • Never deliver against a promise
For your client
  • Pays as work actually happens
  • Confirmation window on every charge
  • Full schedule visible before signing
Two hands. One seal. That is the whole idea.

Free. Not a trial, not a tier.

No subscription for you, ever. Clients pay standard card processing on each milestone, the same as paying online anywhere, and a small slice of that fee is how Handfast keeps the lights on. Compare that to the $36 to $129 per month the big client management platforms now charge.

FAQ

Fair questions, straight answers

A small slice of the standard processing fee on each milestone payment comes to us. That is the entire model. We only earn when you actually get paid, so our incentives point exactly where yours do.

Deposits pay out right away, like any card payment. Later milestones are charged when their trigger fires, held briefly during the client confirmation window, and then released to your bank through Stripe. You see the exact status and countdown for every dollar inside your dashboard.

No, and we will always be straight about that. Handfast provides escrow style milestone protection built on Stripe's payments infrastructure, using committed payment methods, short confirmation holds, and transparent release rules. Escrow has a precise legal definition, and we designed Handfast to deliver the protection without pretending to be something we are not.

They never hand the full project cost to a vendor up front. Money for later milestones is only charged as work actually happens, every charge comes with a confirmation window before release, and the whole schedule was visible before they signed. Many freelancers tell clients about Handfast as a selling point, because it answers the fear every client quietly has.

Raising an issue pauses the automatic release clock, and both sides see the same record: the contract, the milestone terms, the delivery timestamps. That shared record resolves most disagreements on its own. For the rare ones it does not, our published resolution policy governs, and everything stays documented.

Anytime. Projects, client records, and complete payment history export to CSV with one click. We would rather earn your next project than lock up your last one.

Traditional escrow services like Escrow.com are built for one-time asset sales such as domains or vehicles, with fees and workflows that do not fit ongoing creative work. Handfast is built specifically for freelance and creative milestones, using Stripe's payments infrastructure to deliver escrow-style protection without the asset-sale overhead.

Most photographers collect a deposit at booking and invoice the balance later, which leaves the final payment unenforced. With Handfast, the client's payment method is committed to every milestone at signing, so the final balance charges automatically when the wedding is complete instead of relying on the couple to pay an invoice after the fact.

HoneyBook and Dubsado are full client management platforms with monthly subscriptions starting around $36. Handfast leads with the piece that matters most, getting your milestones actually paid, and it is free. It pairs cleanly with any tools you already use, and new capabilities are added based on what customers ask for, so the platform grows with your business.
